Cylinder Head: Assembly

- Lubricate valve stems with clean engine oil.
- Insert valves into their proper locations.
- Install necessary valve spring shims onto the cylinder head, if applicable.
- Lubricate rotators with clean engine oil.
- Install rotators over the guide and on top of the cylinder head or valve spring shims, if applicable.
- Lubricate valve stem seal and the outside diameter of the valve guide with clean engine oil.
- Install valve stem oil seals over the valve tip and onto the valve guides using Valve Stem Seal Installer (J-43105). Tap the valve stem seal onto the valve guide until the valve stem seal installer fully seats the seal.
- Install valve springs and valve spring caps. See Fig 1.
- Use Valve Spring Compressor (J-5892-D) in order to compress the valve spring. Compress the spring enough to clearly see the valve stem key grooves of the valve.
- Install valve stem keys. Use grease to hold the keys in place. Ensure that keys seat properly in the upper groove of valve stem.
- Release and remove the valve spring compressor.
- Lightly tap end of valve stem with a plastic-faced hammer to seat the keys.
- Apply Sealant GM (PN 12346004) to the threads of the ECT sensor.
- Install ECT sensor into the right cylinder head. Tighten ECT sensor to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install ECT sensor bracket and bolt. Tighten the ECT sensor bracket bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install cylinder head coolant hole plug into the left cylinder head. Tighten cylinder head coolant hole plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
