Crankshaft Inspection

- Clean crankshaft in solvent. Remove all sludge or restrictions from the oil passages.
- Dry crankshaft and bearings with compressed air.
- Inspect the crankshaft. Crankshaft journals should be smooth with no evidence of scoring or damage, deep grooves, scratches or uneven wear, pitted surfaces, wear or damage to thrust journal surfaces, scoring or damage to rear seal surface, restrictions to oil passages or damage to threaded bolt holes.
- Inspect crankshaft pin for damage. Measure for proper installed height. Check for correct height, see CRANKSHAFT table. Replace crankshaft pin, if damaged.
- Inspect reluctor wheels for cracked, bent or broken teeth. Measure between the crankshaft shoulder and the front reluctor wheel. Measure between front and rear reluctor wheels. The maximum allowable gap is 0.006" (0.15 mm). See CRANKSHAFT table.
- Measure crankshaft main journals and crank pins for out-of-round and taper.
- Using a suitable fixture, support crankshaft. Measure crankshaft runout using a Magnetic Base Dial Indicator (J-7872) . For correct crankshaft runout not to be exceeded, see CRANKSHAFT table.
- Inspect crankshaft thrust wall surface for wear and/or excessive runout. See CRANKSHAFT table.
