Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

IMPORTANT: Do not reuse the valve rocker arm cover gasket. Install a NEW gasket during assembly.

Remove the ignition coils before cleaning the cover in solvent. Do not submerge the ignition coils in solvent.

Do not remove the oil fill tube or crankcase vent valve grommet from the covers unless service is required.

If the oil fill tube or crankcase vent valve grommet have been removed from the rocker arm covers, install a NEW tube or grommet during assembly.

Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly, bolts, and wire harness from the left cover, if required.

Remove the ignition coil and bracket assembly, bolts, and wire harness from the right cover, if required.

Inspect the tube for a loose fit or damage.
Remove the oil fill cap and tube from the right cover, if required.

Remove the gaskets (1) from the covers.
Remove the cover mounting bolts, with grommets.
Cover mounting bolts and grommets that are not damaged may be reused during assembly.
Clean the covers in solvent.

CAUTION: Refer to SAFETY GLASSES CAUTION in Cautions and Notices.
Dry the covers with compressed air.
Inspect the ventilation system passages for restrictions.
Inspect the gasket grooves for damage.
Inspect the coil bracket threaded bolt holes for damage or debris.
