Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  2. Remove the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
  3. Remove the front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  4. Remove the cylinder head access hole plugs.

  5. Remove the timing chain tensioner shoe bolt.

  6. Remove the timing chain tensioner shoe.
  7. Remove the timing chain tensioner guide bolts.

  8. Remove the timing chain tensioner guide.
  9. Remove the timing chain and the sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and/or Tensioner Replacement .
  10. Loosen and remove the cylinder head bolts.

  11. Remove the cylinder head.

  12. Remove the cylinder head gasket.

  13. Place the cylinder head on a flat, clean surface with the combustion chambers face up, in order to prevent damage to the deck face.
  14. If replacing cylinder head refer to Cylinder Head Disassemble in Engine Mechanical - 4.2 L Unit Repair.
  15. Clean and inspect the cylinder head. Refer to Cylinder Head Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 4.2 L Unit Repair.
