Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2002 GMC Envoy XL, 2002 GMC Envoy, and 2002 Chevrolet TrailBlazer. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
IMPORTANT: Ensure number 1 cylinder is at top dead center.
  1. If replacing new cylinder head, refer to Cylinder Head Assemble in Engine Mechanical - 4.2 L Unit Repair.
  2. Install the dowel pins, cylinder head locator, if necessary.
  3. Install the new cylinder head gasket.

  5. Install the cylinder head.

  7. Add threadlock GM P/N 12345493 to the cylinder head bolts.
  8. Install the cylinder head bolts.

  10. Tighten the long cylinder head bolts (1 through 14) in sequence as shown.
    NOTE: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Tighten 

    1. 7.1. Tighten the bolts to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).
    2. 7.2. Use the J 36660-A in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence an additional 90 degrees.
    3. 7.3. Use the J 36660-A in order to tighten the cylinder head bolts in sequence an additional 60 degrees.
    4. 7.4. Tighten the 2 long end bolts to 20 N.m (89 lb in).
    5. 7.5. Tighten the 1 short end bolt to 18 N.m (13 lb ft).

  12. Install the cylinder head access hole plugs.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the plugs to 5 N.m (44 lb in).

  14. Install the timing chain and sprockets. Refer to Timing Chain, Sprockets, and/or Tensioner Replacement .
  15. Install the front cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement .
  16. Install the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  17. Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Replacement .
