Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the camshaft cover. Refer to Camshaft Cover Replacement .
  2. Rotate the engine until the word Delphi on the exhaust camshaft position actuator is lined up parallel with the cylinder head to cam cover mating surface.

    NOTE: If the exhaust camshaft actuator is moving independently of the camshaft, this means the camshaft is not locked to the actuator. Rotate the engine and camshaft clockwise while the holding the actuator in place and this will lock the camshaft to the actuator.
  3. Using the timing mark on the exhaust camshaft position actuator sprocket as a reference, make a mark on the timing chain link across from it.

  4. Install the J-44217  (1).
    1. Install the hook portion of the timing chain retention tools into one of the timing chain links near the timing chain shoe on both sides of the engine.
    2. Tighten the wingnuts.
    3. Ensure the hooks are still in one of the links and the gauge blocks of the tool are firmly in place on the edge of the head.

  5. Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator bolt.
  6. Remove the exhaust camshaft position actuator.
