Removal (Pickup)

- Drain the fuel tank. See FUEL TANK DRAINING . Remove the fuel tank filler housing to body screws, and retainer. Remove the fuel tank filler housing to fuel tank fill pipe screws. Remove the fuel tank filler housing. Remove the rear axle vent hose from the clip on the fuel fill pipe bracket.
- Raise and support vehicle. Remove the fuel tank ground strap bolt. Remove the fuel tank ground strap. Loosen the fuel tank fill pipe clamp at the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank fill pipe from the fuel tank and vehicle. Remove the fuel system cooler. See FUEL SYSTEM COOLER .
- Remove the fuel tank shield bolts. Remove the fuel tank shield. See Figure. Disconnect the rear fuel return pipe and the rear fuel feed pipe at the chassis fuel pipes. See QUICK CONNECT FITTINGS (METAL COLLAR) . Cap the fuel pipes in order to prevent possible fuel system contamination.
- Remove the fuel feed pipe and the fuel return pipe from the fuel sender and the retaining clips. Place a suitable adjustable jack under the fuel tank. Remove the fuel tank strap bolts. Remove the fuel tank straps. Remove the fuel tank.
- Lower the fuel tank until the electrical connector is accessible. Disconnect the sending unit electrical connector. With the aid of an assistant, place the fuel tank in a suitable work area. Disconnect and remove the fuel feed and return pipes from the sending unit and retaining clips. See QUICK CONNECT FITTINGS (PLASTIC COLLAR) .
- If replacing the fuel tank, remove the sender assembly. See FUEL SENDER ASSEMBLY .
