Diagnostic Procedures

- Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Attempt to start the engine. Observe the DTC information with a scan tool. Are all 3 DTCs P0335, P0340, and P0385 set? If yes, go to step 11. If no, go to next step.
- Start the engine. Observe the CKP SENSOR STATUS parameter with a scan tool. Does the scan tool indicate the CKP sensor status as ANGLE? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 5.
- With the engine running, move the harnesses and connectors related to CKP sensor "A" (by hand only). If the CKP sensor status changes or an engine stall occurs, locate and repair the condition in the harnesses/connectors related to CKP sensor "A". Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect the CKP sensor "A". Connect the test light between the CKP "A" sensor 12-volt reference circuit and a good ground. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 8.
- Connect the test light between the CKP "A" sensor 12-volt reference circuit and the CKP "A" sensor low reference circuit. Does the test light illuminate? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 9.
- Turn ignition on, with engine off. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Command the PCM to operate in time mode "A" with a scan tool. Connect a test light to battery positive voltage and repeatedly touch the CKP sensor "A" signal 2 circuit in the harness connector. Observe the 24X CRANK SENSOR parameter with a scan tool. Does the scan tool indicate an RPM while touching the test light to the signal circuit? If yes, go to step 15. If no, go to step 10.
- Test the CKP sensor "A" 12-volt reference circuit for an open. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 16.
- Test the CKP sensor "A" low reference circuit for an open Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 16.
- Test the CKP sensor "A" signal 2 circuit for the following conditions:
- An open.
- A short to ground or a low reference.
- A short to voltage.
- A short to the CKP signal 1 circuit.
Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 16.
- Disconnect the CMP sensor harness connector. Observe the 12-VOLT REFERENCE parameter with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display OK? If yes, go to step 21. If no, go to next step.
- Raise and support vehicle. Disconnect CKP sensor "A" harness connector. With a scan tool, monitor the 12-VOLT REFERENCE parameter. Does the scan tool display OK? If yes, go to step 17. If no, go to next step.
- Disconnect the CKP "B" sensor harness connector. Observe the 12-VOLT REFERENCE parameter with a scan tool. Does the scan tool display OK? If yes, go to step 18. If no, go to next step.
- Test the CKP sensor "A", the CKP sensor "B", and the CMP sensor 12-volt reference circuits for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 22.
- Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the CKP sensor "A". Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 17.
- Test for an intermittent and/or poor connections at the PCM. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 22.
- Remove the CKP sensor "A". See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 19.
- Remove the CKP sensor "B". See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to step 19.
- Visually inspect the CKP sensor reluctor wheel for damage or looseness. See appropriate article in ENGINES. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 23. If no, go to next step.
- Replace the affected CKP sensor. See CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 23.
- Replace the CMP sensor. See CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step 23.
- Replace PCM. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE under COMPUTERIZED ENGINE CONTROLS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - DEVILLE & SEVILLE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to next step.
- Lower the vehicle. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn off the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine and operate vehicle within the Conditions For Running DTC. You may also operate vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step 2. If no, go to next step.
- Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
NOTE:
If DTC P0386 is also set, continue with the diagnostic table for DTC P0335 before diagnosing DTC P0386.
