Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check-Engine Controls? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. NOTE: If any DTCs are set except P0133 or P0153, refer to those DTCs before proceeding with this diagnostic procedure. See DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS .
  3. Idle the engine at the normal operating temperature. Operate the vehicle within the parameters specified in Conditions for Running DTC. Monitor the Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) information using the scan tool. Did DTC P0133 or P0153 fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to next step. If no, see INTERMITTENT CONDITIONS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  4. Did both DTC P0133 and P0153 fail this ignition? If yes, go to step  8. If no, go to next step.
  5. Inspect for an exhaust system leak. If you find an exhaust leak, repair the exhaust leak as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the following items:
    • Ensure that the HO2S is securely installed.
    • Inspect for corrosion on the terminals.
    • Test the terminal tension at the HO2S and at the PCM.
    • Inspect for damaged wiring.

    Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  14. If no, go to next step.

  7. Disconnect HO2S. Jumper HO2S low signal circuit to a good ground. Observe HO2S voltage on the scan tool. Does the scan tool indicate a voltage of 350-550 mV? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  10.
  8. Jumper HO2S high and low signal circuits to a battery ground. Monitor HO2S voltage using the scan tool. Does the scan tool indicate a voltage less than 200 mV? If yes, go to step  13. If no, go to step  9.
  9. NOTE: Determine and correct the cause of the contamination before replacing a sensor. Inspect for the following conditions:
    • Fuel contamination.
    • Use of improper RTV sealant.
    • Engine oil and coolant consumption.
  10. Replace affected HO2S. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - CORVETTE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  14.
  11. Remove jumper wire from HO2S low signal circuit. Measure voltage between the HO2S low signal circuit and a good ground. Is voltage near 5 V? If yes, go to step  12. If no, go to step  11.
  12. Repair high signal circuit for a short to ground or short to voltage. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  14.
  13. Repair open HO2S low signal circuit, or repair poor PCM connections. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  14.
  14. Repair HO2S high signal circuit for an open, or repair poor PCM connections. Did you complete the repair? If yes, go to step  14.
  15. Replace affected HO2S. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR under SENSORS in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - CORVETTE article. Did you complete the replacement? If yes, go to step  14.
  16. Clear the DTCs with a scan tool. Turn OFF the ignition for 30 seconds. Start the engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition cycle? If yes, go to step  2. If no, go to next step.
  17. Observe the Capture Info with a scan tool. Are there any DTCs that have not been diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
