Cylinder Bores
WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue and 2002 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Measure diameter of cylinder bore at 1/2" (13 mm) and 4" (100 mm) below deck surface. Measure in 2 directions (in-line with crankshaft and at 90 degree angle to crankshaft), then average the measurements. If cylinder dimensions are not as specified, machine cylinders as necessary, and replace pistons. Measure cylinders for out-of-round and taper, starting at 1/2" (13 mm) from top of cylinder, measure top, center and bottom of bores at 90 degree increments. See CYLINDER BLOCK table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS.
- To calculate how much material to remove when honing or boring cylinder, add diameter of piston to specified oil clearance. See PISTONS, PINS & RINGS table under ENGINE SPECIFICATIONS. Subtract .002" (.050 mm) from sum to allow for finish honing.
- Bore cylinder to .0015-.0025" (.038-.062 mm) less than desired finished size. Hone cylinder to finished size.
