Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Installation

WARNING:
Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
Tools Required:
- Steering Linkage Installer (J-44015)
- Axle Seal Protector (SA91112T)
- Position the vehicle on a hoist and raise the vehicle.
- Install NEW retaining rings on the stub shaft. See Figure .
- Install the PTU bolts and the PTU to the transaxle. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install stub shaft into transaxle. See Figure .
- Install PTU vent hose.
- With the transaxle supported, carefully raise the transaxle. It may be helpful to lower the vehicle down around the transaxle.
- Carefully assemble the engine to the transaxle.
- Install the upper and lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. See Figure . Tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts (18 mm) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten the transaxle-to-engine bolts (15 mm) to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the engine-to-transaxle bolt located above the PTU. Tighten the engine-to-transaxle bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install PTU-to-engine bracket assembly. See Figure . Tighten the PTU-to-engine bracket bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install exhaust downpipe.
- Rotate the crank and align the net hole of the flexplate through the starter opening.
- Install the torque converter-to-flexplate bolts through the starter opening. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the starter and the starter bolts. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the starter wiring harness as follows:
- Tighten the battery positive cable-to-starter nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten the "S" terminal nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the right axle shaft the PTU stub shaft. See Fig 1 .
- Install a NEW retaining ring on the left axle shaft. See Fig 2 .
- Install the axle seal protector inside the left axle seal. See Fig 3
.
NOTE: Ensure not to damage the left axle seal.
- Lubricate the axle with transmission fluid.
- Carefully install the left axle shaft into the transaxle.
- Remove the axle seal protector after the splines clear the axle seal protector, but before the axle shaft is fully installed.
- Push the left axle shaft all the way into the transaxle.
- Support the cradle with a cradle support.
- With the cradle on a support table, install the cradle and the cradle fasteners carefully onto the vehicle. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the rear pitch restrictor through bolt. See Figure . Tighten bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the front pitch restrictor bolts, through-bolt and front pitch restrictor. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Use the steering linkage installer to install the knuckle to the outer tie rod. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Install the outer tie rod-to-knuckle nut. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
- Install the lower control arm ball stud to the knuckle. See Figure
.NOTE: Tighten the nut one additional flat to align cotter pin hole if necessary.
- Install the nut and a NEW cotter pin. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the rack and pinion bolts to the cradle. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the lower stabilizer nuts to the cradle on both sides of the vehicle. See Figure . Tighten nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the drive shaft to the PTU. See Figure
. Tighten drive shaft bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
.CAUTION: Avoid spinning the seal in the case bore. Damage to the case bore may result.
- If the transaxle being installed is not NEW, the transaxle oil cooler line seals must be removed and replaced. See appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
- For 2002 models, see TRANSAXLE OIL COOLER LINE SEALS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in SERVICING - VUE (AF33-5) article.
- Install the transaxle oil cooler lines and nut to the transaxle. See Figure . Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the front air dam deflector-to-cradle pushpins. See Fig 4 .
- Install the left-side and right-side inner splash shields. See Figure .
- Install the left-side and right-side wheel and tire assemblies. Tighten wheel nuts in a criss-cross pattern to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the upper left-hand transaxle mount bolts. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Install the fluid level indicator assembly. See Figure . Tighten fluid level indicator bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Remove the engine support tool. See Figure .
- Remove the tie straps from the radiator.
- Install the positive battery cable to the transaxle stud.
- Install the harness to the transaxle range switch stud and the control cable bracket.
- Connect the input and output speed sensor harness connectors.
- Connect the transaxle range switch harness connectors.
- Connect the control cable to the control cable bracket. See Figure .
- Connect the control cable to the transaxle range switch assembly lever.
