Torque Steer

On a dry, smooth, flat road, vehicle has a left or right steering force that is eliminated when transmission is shifted into NEUTRAL. The level of steering force is usually (but not always) dependent on amount of torque which is applied by engine. Torque steer at constant highway speed is frequently mistaken for lead/pull.

1. Did you review General Description and perform necessary inspections? If yes, go to next step. If no, see VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION .
2. Drive vehicle on a straight, smooth, flat road at 40-60 mph. Remove your foot from accelerator. Shift transmission into NEUTRAL in order to allow vehicle to coast. Momentarily release steering wheel and note any change in direction of vehicle. Repeat this test with vehicle traveling in opposite direction in order to eliminate crosswind effects. Lead/pull caused by unlevel roads and crosswinds are considered normal. Does vehicle direction change when steering wheel is momentarily released? If yes, problem is with tires. If no, go to next step.
3. Drive vehicle on a straight, smooth, flat road. Shift transmission into Drive. Press accelerator and momentarily release steering wheel. Repeat this test with vehicle traveling in opposite direction in order to eliminate crosswind effects. Lead/pull caused by unlevel roads and crosswinds are considered normal. Does vehicle exhibit torque steer when accelerator is pressed? If yes, go to next step. If no, system is okay.
4. Inspect front suspension for worn or damaged components. Repair as necessary. Did you complete inspection/repair? If yes, go to next step.
5. Inspect vehicle trim height. See RIDE HEIGHT  under INSPECTION & ADJUSTMENTS. Repair as necessary. Road test vehicle in order to verify customer complaint. Does vehicle still exhibit torque steer? If yes, go to next step. If no, system is okay.
6. Inspect for worn or damaged powertrain mounts. Replace as necessary. Did you complete inspection/repair? If yes, go to next step.
7. Operate vehicle in order to verify repair.
