Noise Diagnosis

Any noise emitted from front of vehicle that is induced by VEHICLE SPEED or DRIVING TERRAIN as related to front suspension.
- Did you review General Description and perform necessary inspections? If yes, go to next step. If no, see VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION .
- Attempt to duplicate noise. Road test vehicle. Is front suspension noisy? If yes, go to next step. If no, system is okay.
- Shift transmission into Park. Turn ignition off. Bounce front of vehicle in order to duplicate noise. Is noise present? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 5.
- Bounce front of vehicle. Use a Chassis Ear (J-39570) in order to locate source of noise. Repair or replace suspect component as necessary. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Raise and support vehicle. Inspect all of front suspension components for any damage. Are any components damaged? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 7.
- Repair any damaged components. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Inspect tires for proper inflation. Correct tire inflation pressure as necessary. Inspect tires for unusual wear. Does either tire exhibit unusual tread wear? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Rotate tires. Road test vehicle. Is noise now emitted from rear of vehicle? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 10.
- Replace tire that is causing noise. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Ensure that ball joints and steering linkage are lubricated, if applicable. Lubricate/replace as necessary. Did you service any components? If yes, go to step 25. If no, go to next step.
- Ensure that all of wheel nuts are tightened to correct specification. Tighten as necessary. Did you tighten any wheel nuts? If yes, go to step 25. If no, go to next step.
- Use your hands in order to push and pull strut. Is strut loose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 15.
- Inspect strut fasteners for correct fastener tightening specification. Tighten as necessary. Use your hand to push and pull strut. Is strut loose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 25.
- Replace loose or worn strut components. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Use your hands in order to push and pull on stabilizer shaft. Is stabilizer shaft loose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 20.
- Inspect all of stabilizer shaft fasteners. Tighten as necessary. Use your hands in order to push and pull on stabilizer shaft. Is stabilizer shaft loose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 25.
- Observe location of stabilizer shaft looseness. Is looseness observed at stabilizer shaft link? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 20.
- Replace stabilizer shaft link. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Replace stabilizer shaft insulator and/or bracket. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Replace stabilizer shaft insulator and/or bracket. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 23.
- Inspect control arm fasteners for correct fastener tightening specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . Tighten as necessary. Inspect control arm for looseness. Is control arm loose? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 25.
- Replace any worn or loose control arm bushings. See LOWER CONTROL ARM BUSHINGS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to step 25.
- Start engine with drive wheels off of ground. Shift transmission into Drive. Increase drive wheel speed until noise is at most audible level. Use a Chassis Ear (J-39570) in order to locate source of noise. Does either wheel bearing exhibit noise? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step 8.
- Replace wheel bearing. See HUB & BEARING ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. Did you complete repair? If yes, go to next step.
- Operate vehicle in order to verify repair.
NOTE:
Compare this vehicle to an identical vehicle in order to determine if customer's concern is a normal operating characteristic of vehicle.
CAUTION:
DO NOT spin drive wheels faster than 35 mph as indicated by speedometer. This limit is necessary because speedometer indicates only one half of actual wheel speed when one drive wheel is spinning and other drive wheel is stopped. Personal injury and damage may result from high speed spinning.
NOTE:
This step will require assistance of another person to maintain drive train speed. Do not use cruise control to maintain drivetrain speed.
