Removal (5.3L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2003 GMC Envoy XL, 2003 GMC Envoy, 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Disconnect the battery.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Drain the transmission fluid if necessary. See appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  4. Remove the rear drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  5. Support the transmission with a transmission jack.
  6. Remove the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support. See Figure .
  7. Remove the transmission support from the vehicle. See Figure .
  8. Remove the transmission mount bolt (1). See Fig 1 .

  9. Remove the transmission mount from the vehicle.
  10. Remove the front exhaust pipe assembly.
  11. Lower the transmission to gain access to the top and sides of the transmission.
  12. Remove the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article.
  13. Remove the range selector cable end from the transmission range selector lever ball stud (6) and the bracket (1). See Figure .
  14. Remove the transmission heat shield. See Figure .
  15. Disconnect the transmission vent hose, the PNP switch connectors, and the main electrical connector from the transmission.
  16. Remove the transmission harness from the retainers.
  17. Remove the bolt that secures the fuel line bracket to the left side of the transmission. See Fig 2 .

  18. Remove the torque converter access plug. See Figure .
  19. Mark the flywheel and torque converter orientation for reassembly.
  20. Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing.
  21. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the transmission. See OIL COOLER HOSE/PIPE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  22. Plug the transmission oil cooler line connectors in the transmission case.
  23. Install a safety chain around the transmission.
  24. Remove the nut that secures the filler tube to the bell housing. See Fig 3 .

  25. Remove the transmission filler tube.
  26. Remove the remaining nuts, studs and/or bolts that secure the transmission to the engine. See Fig 4 .

  27. Install the Converter Holding Strap (J-21366) onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  28. Pull the transmission straight back.
  29. Remove the transmission from the vehicle.
