Installation (5.3L)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 8 other vehicles, including the 2003 Oldsmobile Bravada, 2003 GMC Envoy XL, 2003 GMC Envoy, 2003 Chevrolet TrailBlazer, and 2002 Oldsmobile Bravada. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the converter holding strap onto the transmission bell housing to retain the torque converter.
  2. Raise the transmission into place and remove the converter holding strap from the transmission.
  3. Slide the transmission straight onto the locating pins while lining up the marks on the flywheel and the torque converter made during removal. The torque converter must be flush onto the flywheel and rotate freely by hand.
  4. Install nuts, studs and/or bolts securing the transmission to the engine. See Figure . Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Install the fuel line retaining bracket to the transmission. See Figure .
  6. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Use care not to drop the bolts into the bell housing. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Install the torque converter access plug. See Figure .
  8. Remove the safety chain from the transmission.
  9. Install the transmission filler tube.
  10. Install the filler tube nut. See Figure . Tighten the filler tube nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  11. Install the transmission vent hose (2), fuel lines, and the wiring harness to the transmission.
  12. Install the transmission harness to the retainers.
  13. Install the heat shield to the transmission. See Figure . Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  14. Install the bolts securing the heat shield to the transmission. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  15. Install the shift cable end to the transmission shift lever ball stud (6) and bracket (1). See Figure .
  16. Install the transfer case, if equipped. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article.
  17. Install the front exhaust pipe assembly. Tighten bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  18. Install the transmission mount to the vehicle.
  19. Install the bolts (1) securing the transmission mount to the transmission. See Figure . Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  20. Install the transmission support to the vehicle. See Figure .
  21. Lower the transmission and remove the transmission jack.
  22. Install the nuts securing the transmission mount to the transmission support. See Figure . Tighten the nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  23. Install the rear drive shaft. See appropriate DRIVE SHAFTS & UNIVERSAL JOINTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  24. Flush the transmission oil cooler and cooling lines at this time, if necessary. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  25. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the transmission. See OIL COOLER HOSE/PIPE under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  26. Lower the vehicle.
  27. Connect the battery. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  28. Fill transmission with appropriate fluid to proper level and check for leaks. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article as follows:
  29. Road test the vehicle and check for proper operation.
