Control Cable: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Ensure that the vehicle is properly supported and squarely positioned. To help avoid personal injury when a vehicle is on a hoist, provide additional support for the vehicle on the opposite end from which the components are being removed.
NOTE: All shifter cable and park lock cable clips are one time usage only. Any service repair requiring cables to be disconnected from the transaxle control cable bracket or shifter assembly will require a cable clip replacement.
  1. Move control assembly into Neutral position.
    NOTE: Record all pre-set radio stations prior to disconnecting battery and reprogram pre-set stations after repair.
  2. Remove battery cover. Disconnect negative battery cable. Disconnect positive battery cable. Loosen battery hold-down screw and remove battery.
    WARNING: DO NOT touch the cooling fan. Serious personal injury may result.
  3. Remove battery cooling box. See BATTERY COOLING BOX  .
  4. Loosen battery tray bracket screws and remove bracket. See Fig 1 .
  5. Remove console. See CONSOLE  .
  6. Using Fascia Retainer Remover Tool (J-36346), disconnect control cable from control assembly lever. See Fig 2 .
  7. Depress control cable retainer clip tabs and remove cable from control assembly. See Fig 3 .
    CAUTION: Control cable must be disconnected from transaxle range switch lever prior to disconnecting it from control cable bracket. Otherwise damage to manual shift shaft may result, requiring transaxle disassembly.
  8. Using fascia retainer remover, disconnect control cable from transaxle range switch lever. See Fig 4 .
  9. Depress control cable retainer clip tabs and remove cable from control cable bracket.
  10. Position the vehicle on the hoist and raise the vehicle.
  11. Remove the control cable from the cable-to-steering gear assembly retaining clip. See Fig 5 .
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Remove control cable grommet from dash panel. See Fig 6 .
  14. Remove control cable from vehicle.
