Checking Fluid Levels

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
WARNING: Saturn ATF (P/N 21005966 and 21019223), and DEXRON-III ATF are not compatible with this transaxle. This transaxle uses Saturn DEX-CVT(R) Fluid (P/N 22688912) only.
NOTE: The VT25E transaxle is not equipped with a dipstick.
  1. Install scan tool. Start vehicle. Perform the following:
    • Shift transaxle from Park to Reverse for 10 seconds.
    • Shift transaxle from Reverse to Drive for 10 seconds.
    • Shift transaxle back to Park. The engine should remain running.
  2. Remove the plug from the center of the fluid fill lower tube. The fluid fill lower tube is located on the bottom of the unit. See Fig 1 .
  3. If fluid drains down as a steady stream from the opening, wait for it to stop. If fluid does not drain from the opening, add more fluid until it starts to drain as a steady stream, then stop adding fluid immediately. Allow fluid to drain until the fluid stream stops.
  4. Replace the lower fill tube plug. Tighten the plug to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
    NOTE: DO NOT remove the plug.
  5. On the scan tool, observe the Trans. Fluid Temp. and record the temperature.
    • If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 68°F (20°C), add 0.5 Qt. (0.47L) of fluid to the transaxle.
    • If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 104°F (40°C), add 0.75 Qt. (0.71L) of fluid to the transaxle.
    • If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 140°F (60°C), add 1.0 Qt. (0.95L) of fluid to the transaxle.
    • If TRANS FLUID TEMP is 176°F (80°C), add 1.25 Qts. (1.2L) of fluid to the transaxle.
