Memory Steer

- Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? See DESCRIPTION and VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION . Go to next step.
- Road test vehicle in order to verify if condition is present. Go to next step.
- Ensure that all of the tires are inflated to the correct pressure.
- Lubricate the tie rod ends and the ball joints, if applicable. Inspect the suspension system for worn or damaged components. Repair as necessary. Road test the vehicle in order to verify the customer complaint.
- Check for proper wheel alignment. See WHEEL ALIGNMENT.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Disconnect both of the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Use your hands in order to move the tie rod ends. If either tie rod is abnormally difficult to move, replace outer tie rod ends.
- Inspect for binding strut bearings and lower ball joints. Use your hands to push and pull the front of the wheels inboard and outboard. If struts are difficult to move, go to next step. If struts move normally, go to step 9 .
- Remove the tire/wheel. Disconnect the strut from the steering knuckle. Use your hands to rotate the strut. If struts are abnormally difficult to rotate, go to next step. If struts move normally, go to step 10 .
- Replace the strut bearing. See STRUT ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After completing repair, go to step 15 .
- Use your hands in order to rotate the steering knuckle/ball joint. If the steering knuckle/ball joint abnormally difficult to rotate, go to next step. If steering knuckle/ball joint operates normally, go to step 15 .
- Replace lower control arm. See LOWER CONTROL ARM under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After completing repair, go to next step.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Rotate the steering wheel ONE revolution in either direction. Rotate the steering wheel back to the original position. If steering wheel is difficult to rotate, go to next step.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft. Note the position of the steering wheel and rotate the steering wheel ONE revolution in either direction. Rotate the steering wheel back to the original position as previously noted. If steering wheel is abnormally difficult to rotate in either direction, repair steering gear as necessary.
- Road test vehicle to verify complaint. If condition is still present, repair steering column as necessary.
- Road test vehicle to verify repair.
