Abnormal Noise

- Did you review the General Description and perform the necessary inspections? See DESCRIPTION and VISUAL/PHYSICAL INSPECTION . Go to next step.
- Road test vehicle in order to verify if condition is present. Go to next step.
- Shift the transmission into Park. Turn the ignition off. Bounce the front of the vehicle in order to duplicate the noise. If noise is present, go to next step. If noise is not present, go to step .
- Bounce the front of the vehicle. Use Chassis Ears (J-39570) in order to locate the source of the noise. Repair or replace the suspect components as necessary. After completing repair, go to step .
- Raise and support the vehicle. Inspect all of the front suspension components for any damage. If any components are damaged, replace and road test for condition. If condition still exists, go to next step.
- Inspect the tires for proper inflation. Inspect the tires for unusual wear. If tire exhibits unusual wear, rotate tires and road test vehicle. If noise moves to rear of vehicle, replace faulty tire(s).
- Ensure that the ball joints and steering linkage are lubricated, if applicable. Lubricate/replace as necessary. Go to next step.
- Ensure that all of the wheel nuts are tightened to the correct specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . If wheel lug nuts are within specification, go to next step. If not, tighten to specification and go to step 18 .
- Use your hands in order to push and pull the strut. If strut is loose, go to next step. If strut is not loose, go to step 12 .
- Inspect the strut fasteners for the correct fastener tightening specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . If strut is still loose, go to step 12
- Replace the loose or worn strut components. See STRUT ASSEMBLY . After completing repair, go to step 18 .
- Use your hands in order to push and pull on the stabilizer shaft. If shaft is loose, go to next step. If shaft is not loose, go to step 15 .
- Inspect all of the stabilizer shaft fasteners for the correct fastener tightening specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . If shaft is still loose, go to next step. If shaft is not loose, go to step 15 .
- Observe the location of the stabilizer shaft looseness. If stabilizer looseness is caused by stabilizer links, or stabilizer insulators, replace stabilizer links or stabilizer insulators. See STABILIZER BAR under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. After repair, go to step 18 .
- Inspect the control arms for looseness or movement. If movement is observed, go to next step. If movement is not observed, go to step 17 .
- Inspect the control arm fasteners for the correct fastener tightening specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS . If control arm is still loose, replace control arm bushings. Go to step 18 .
- Start the engine with the drive wheels off of the ground. Shift the transmission into Drive. Increase the drive wheel speed until the noise is at the most audible level. Use Chassis Ears (J-39570) to locate the source of the noise. If either wheel bearings exhibit noise, replace faulty wheel bearing. See HUB & BEARING ASSEMBLY under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Road test vehicle in order to verify repair. If concern is still present, go to step 3
