Diagnostic Procedures

- Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check - engine controls, go to next step.
- Disconnect the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) canister side of the purge pipe from the EVAP purge solenoid. Install a hand-held vacuum gauge to the EVAP purge solenoid purge port. Disconnect the EVAP purge solenoid harness connector. Monitor vacuum on the vacuum gauge. Start engine and allow the engine to idle. Increase the idle to 1200-1500 RPM. Does the vacuum gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to step 8. If no, go to next step.
- Connect the EVAP purge solenoid harness connector. Monitor vacuum on the vacuum gauge. Increase the idle to 1200-1500 RPM. Does the vacuum gauge indicate an increase in vacuum? If yes, go to step 5. If no, go to next step.
- Turn ignition off. Remove and then install the fuel fill cap. Turn ignition on, with engine off. Observe the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor parameter with a scan tool. Is the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor parameter 1.30-1.70 volts? If yes, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS . If no, go to step 7.
- Test EVAP purge solenoid control circuit for a short to ground. Did you find and correct the conditions? If yes, go to step 9. If no, go to next step.
- Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the EVAP purge solenoid. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step 9. If no, go to step 8.
- Replace the Fuel Tank Pressure (FTP) sensor. After replacing sensor, go to step 9.
- Replace the EVAP purge solenoid. After replacing solenoid, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Operate vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC . You may also operate vehicle within the conditions observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records. Did the DTC fail this ignition? If yes, go to step 2. If no, go to next step.
- With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS . If no, system is okay.
