Steering Gear Actuator & Differential Cover: Removal

    NOTE: When lifting the vehicle DO NOT allow the jack to touch the rear steering gear. If the jack touches the rear steering gear you may damage the gear or the rack and pinion boots. If the boots are damaged replace the rack and pinion boot.
  1. Release the park brake. Raise the vehicle. Remove the tire/wheel assemblies. Place appropriate drain container under differential housing. Remove the drain plug and drain the fluid from the differential housing.
  2. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear protection shield. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the control module. Disconnect the electrical connector from the rear position sensor.
  3. Remove the outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckle. Remove the nuts retaining the outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Using the Steering Linkage Puller (J-24319-B), remove the outer tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Remove the outer tie rod end from the inner tie rod.
  4. Disconnect the differential vent hose from the vent tube. Remove the bolts retaining the steering gear actuator and cover to the differential. Remove the steering gear actuator and cover from the vehicle.
