Differential Case & Ring Gear: Installation

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 19 other vehicles, including the 2003 GMC Yukon XL, 2003 GMC Yukon, 2003 GMC Sierra, 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe, and 2003 Chevrolet Silverado. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  2. Install the ring gear to the differential case. Align the holes in the differential case to the bolts holes in the ring gear. The ring gear bolts use right hand threads. Install the NEW ring gear bolts. Tighten the ring gear bolts alternately and in stages, gradually pulling the ring gear onto the differential case. Tighten NEW ring gear bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  . Install the differential assembly.
  3. If removed, install differential side bearings. See DIFFERENTIAL SIDE BEARINGS  . Install axle housing spreader onto the axle housing. Install the Guide Pins (J-25025), the Dial Indicator (J-8001-1) and the appropriate adapters onto the axle housing.
  4. Push the dial indicator stem against the edge of the axle housing spreader and preload the dial indicator until the needle has moved approximately 3/4 of a turn clockwise. Rotate the dial indicator housing to align the dial indicator needle to ZERO.
    5. CAUTION: DO NOT spread the axle housing more than 0.015" (0.38 mm). Overspreading the housing may result in component damage.
  5. Spread the axle housing by turning the clevis screw of the axle housing spreader clockwise while observing the dial indicator. Spread the housing just enough to install the differential case assembly. Install the differential case assembly. Remove the axle housing spreader, guide pins, dial indicator and adapters from the axle housing.
    6. NOTE: DO NOT use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener.
  6. Corresponding letters are stamped on the bearing caps and axle housing. The bearing caps must be reassembled in the same position as removed. Install the bearing caps. Ensure the correct fastener are used in the correct location. Install the bearing cap bolts. Tighten the bearing cap bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Set side bearing preload. See SIDE BEARING PRELOAD  under ADJUSTMENTS. Set ring gear backlash. SeeBACKLASH & FINAL ASSEMBLY  under ADJUSTMENTS.
  8. Install the axle shafts. See AXLE SHAFT & SEAL  . Install steering gear actuator and differential cover. See STEERING GEAR ACTUATOR & DIFFERENTIAL COVER  . Install wheel/tire assemblies.
  9. Fill the axle with lubricant. Use the proper fluid. See LUBRICATION  . Lower vehicle.
