Differential Assembly: Installation
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 17 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 GMC Sierra, 2002 GMC Savana Special, and 2002 GMC Savana Camper Special. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Install the differential side bearings, if necessary. Lubricate the differential side bearings with appropriate axle lubricant. See LUBRICATION . Place the differential case, with the bearing cups installed, into the axle housing. Support the case in order to keep the case from falling out of the axle housing. Install the bearing caps and bolts. DO NOT torque the bearing cap bolts at this time.
- Turn the adjusters evenly on each side using the Side Bearing Adjustment Spanner (J-24429) until snug against the differential case side bearings. Adjust the differential side bearing preload. See Figure . See SIDE BEARING PRELOAD under ADJUSTMENTS. Adjust the backlash. See RING & PINION GEAR BACKLASH under ADJUSTMENTS.
- Perform a gear tooth contact pattern check. See DRIVE AXLE - GEAR TOOTH CONTACT PATTERNS article in GENERAL INFORMATION. Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Tighten fasteners to specification in correct sequence, if indicated. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Tighten the bearing cap bolts to specification. Install the axle shafts and NEW gaskets. See AXLE SHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION.
- Install the rear axle housing cover and a NEW gasket. Tighten the cover bolts to specification. Fill the axle with lubricant. See LUBRICATION . Lower the vehicle.
NOTE:
Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener.
