Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Removal

- Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
- Remove the air cleaner intake duct. See AIR CLEANER INTAKE DUCT .
- Remove the engine mount strut brackets from the upper radiator support. See UPPER RADIATOR SUPPORT .
- Install the engine support fixture. See ENGINE SUPPORT FIXTURE .
- Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connectors from the transaxle and the PNP switch.
- Remove the automatic transaxle range selector cable from the PNP switch and the automatic transaxle range selector cable bracket. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
- Remove the ground wire nuts and the ground wires from the studs.
- Remove the upper transaxle bolts (3, 4 and 5) and the stud (2). See Fig 1 .
- Raise and support the vehicle.
- Drain the transaxle fluid. See LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
- Remove the frame from the vehicle. See FRAME REPLACEMENT .
- Position a transmission jack under the transaxle and secure the transmission jack to the transaxle.
- Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube bolt. See Fig 2 .
- Remove the transaxle fluid filler fill tube. See Fig 2 .
- Remove the torque converter cover bolts. See Fig 3 .
- Remove the torque converter covers. See Fig 3 .
- Remove the starter motor. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
- Install the appropriate flywheel holder to the flywheel and remove the torque converter bolts. See Fig 4 .
- Remove the transaxle oil cooler pipes from the transaxle. See OIL COOLER HOSE/PIPES under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
- Remove the drive axles from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
- Secure the drive axles to steering knuckle and the struts.
- Disconnect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.
- Remove the transaxle brace. See TRANSAXLE BRACE .
- Remove the lower transaxle bolt (6) and the stud (1). See Fig 1 .
- Using the transmission jack, lower and remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
- Remove the PNP switch. See PARK/NEUTRAL POSITION SWITCH under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
- Remove the transaxle mount.
- If the transaxle is being disassembled and inspected, see appropriate OVERHAUL article.
- Use appropriate oil cooler and line flusher to flush the transaxle oil cooler and the transaxle oil cooler hose/pipes. See OIL COOLER FLUSHING under LUBRICATION in appropriate SERVICING article.
CAUTION:
Ensure the transmission jack is properly secured to the transaxle.
