Diagnostic Procedures

  1. Perform diagnostic system check - engine controls. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK - ENGINE CONTROLS  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM. After performing diagnostic system check, go to next step.
  2. Start engine. Allow the engine to idle. Observe the CMP Resync Counter with the scan tool. Is the CMP Resync Counter incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, see DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  3. Turn ignition off. Disconnect the CMP sensor connector. Start engine. Observe CMP Resync on the scan tool. Did the CMP Resync Counter stop incrementing? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  6 .
  4. Visually and physically inspect all circuits going to the CMP sensor for being routed too close to secondary ignition wires or components, being routed too close to aftermarket add-on electrical equipment, or being routed too close to solenoids, relays, and motors. If you find incorrect routing, correct the harness routing. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to step  6 .
  5. Test for an intermittent and for a poor connection at the CMP sensor. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to step  7 .
  6. Replace PCM. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article. Perform PCM relearn procedure. See POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE  under PROGRAMMING. After replacing PCM, go to step  9 .
  7. Disconnect PCM harness connector. Check CMP sensor terminals at PCM for faulty connection. Repair as necessary. Did you find and correct the condition? If yes, go to step  9 . If no, go to next step.
  8. Replace CMP sensor. After replacing sensor, go to next step.
  9. Use the scan tool in order to clear the DTCs. Turn ignition off for 30 seconds. Start engine. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC. See CONDITIONS FOR RUNNING DTC  . Does the DTC run and pass? If yes, go to next step. If no, go to step  2 .
  10. With a scan tool, observe the stored information, Capture Info. Does the scan tool display any DTCs that you have not diagnosed? If yes, see DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE DEFINITIONS  . If no, system is okay.
