Crankshaft Position Sensor: Installation

  1. Inspect the CKP sensor "O" ring and lubricate with a mineral based grease.
  2. Insert the CKP sensor into the block.
  3. Install the CKP sensor retaining bolt. Tighten the bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Install the starter. See Figure .
  5. Install the starter bolts. Tighten the starter bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Connect the harness connectors to the starter. Tighten the battery terminal nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  7. Connect the "S" terminal connector to the starter. Tighten nut to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Connect the negative battery cable. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  10. Insert the CKP sensor into the block.
  11. Install the CKP sensor bolt. Tighten the bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .


  1. Lubricate the "O" ring with clean engine oil before installation and replace if damaged.
  2. Install CKP sensor to the block. See Figure .
  3. Install the sensor attaching bolt. Tighten the bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Connect CKP sensor harness connector.
  5. Install the right tire and wheel. Tighten wheel nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. See CKP SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE  under PROGRAMMING.


  1. Install the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor 24X with bolts and route harness as noted during removal.
  2. Install the harness retaining clip with bolt. Tighten the bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  3. Apply Sealer (GM P/N United States 12345739, Canadian P/N 10953541), or equivalent, to the keyway of the crankshaft balancer.
  4. Place the crankshaft balancer into position over the key in the crankshaft.
  5. Install the Crankshaft Balance Installer (J 29113) onto the crankshaft. See Fig 1 .
  6. Install the crankshaft balancer into position.
  7. Remove the installer from the crankshaft balancer.
  8. Install the crankshaft balancer washer and bolt. Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  9. Use the utility stand to raise the frame/powertrain.
  10. Install NEW right side frame bolts.
  11. Install the right engine splash shield.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the drive belt.
  14. Perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. See CKP SYSTEM VARIATION LEARN PROCEDURE  under PROGRAMMING.
