Removal (3.4L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: An 8-digit identification number is stamped on the left hand fuel rail, fueling even cylinders 2, 4 and 6. Refer to this number if servicing or part replacement is required.
NOTE: Cap the fittings and plug the holes when servicing the fuel system to prevent dirt and other contaminants from entering the open pipes and passages.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  .
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  4. Drain cooling system into an approved container.
  5. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe, if equipped.
  6. Remove the brake vacuum pipe at the plenum.
  7. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and the PCV valve. See Figure .
  8. Remove the electronic ignition coil and module assembly. See Figure .
  9. Remove Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid. See Figure .
  10. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor.
  11. Remove throttle cable bracket with cables.
  12. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve.
  13. Disconnect the Injector harness.
  14. Remove the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum line . See Figure .
  15. Disconnect the MAP sensor harness connector. Remove the MAP sensor mounting bolts. Remove the MAP sensor.
  16. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  17. Remove the upper intake manifold bolts. See Figure .
  18. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly and gaskets.
  19. Clean the gasket surfaces.
  20. Remove the engine compartment fuel pipe retainer bolt.
  21. Disconnect the engine fuel feed pipe at the fuel rail. See Figure .
  22. Disconnect the engine fuel return pipe at the fuel pressure regulator.
  23. Remove the fuel feed pipe and fuel return pipe "O" rings and discard.
  24. Disconnect the main injector harness electrical connector.
  25. Pull up the lock release (2) of the fuel injector connector. Depress the lock tab (1) and lift the connector from the injector. See Fig 1 .
  26. Remove the injector harness from the fuel rail.
  27. Disconnect the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor harness connector.
  28. Remove the fuel rail attaching bolts and fuel rail assembly. See Fig 2 .
  29. Remove and discard the injector "O" ring seal from the spray tip end of each injector.
