Removal (3.4L)

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to repair the engine fuel feed pipe or the engine fuel return pipe. Replace a damaged engine fuel feed pipe or the engine fuel return pipe.
  1. Relieve the fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE  .
  2. Clean all engine fuel pipe connections and areas surrounding the engine fuel pipe connections before disconnecting the engine fuel pipe connections to avoid possible contamination of the fuel system.
  3. Disconnect the quick-connect fittings in the engine compartment. See FUEL LINE QUICK CONNECT FITTINGS  .
  4. Plug the chassis fuel feed pipe and the chassis fuel return pipe as required. See Fig 1 .
  5. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  6. Remove the air cleaner assembly.
  7. Drain cooling system into an approved container.
  8. Remove the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) pipe, if equipped.
  9. Remove the brake vacuum pipe at the plenum.
  10. Disconnect the fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose from the fuel pressure regulator and the PCV valve. See Fig 2 .
  11. Remove the electronic ignition coil and module assembly. See Fig 3 .
  12. Remove Evaporative Emissions (EVAP) canister purge solenoid. See Fig 4 .
  13. Disconnect the Throttle Position (TP) sensor harness connector.
  14. Remove throttle cable bracket with cables.
  15. Disconnect the Idle Air Control (IAC) valve harness connector.
  16. Disconnect the Injector harness.
  17. Disconnect the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor vacuum line . See Fig 5 .
  18. Disconnect the MAP sensor harness connector. Remove the MAP sensor mounting bolts. Remove the MAP sensor. See Fig 5 .
  19. Disconnect the coolant hoses from the throttle body.
  20. Remove the upper intake manifold bolts. See Fig 6 .
  21. Remove the upper intake manifold assembly and gaskets.
  22. Clean the gasket surfaces.
  23. Remove the engine compartment fuel pipe retainer bolt.
  24. Disconnect the engine fuel return pipe from the fuel pressure regulator. Discard the "O" ring.
  25. Disconnect the engine fuel feed pipe from the fuel rail. Discard the "O" ring. See Fig 7 .
