Throttle Body: Installation

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Grand Am and 2003 Oldsmobile Alero. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: Identification number is stamped on throttle body. Use identification number to order replacement components.
  1. Inspect the throttle body gasket (3) and replace if necessary. See Figure .
  2. Install the throttle body (4) to the intake manifold. See Figure .
  3. Install the throttle body attaching bolts and studs (5). Tighten the throttle body attaching bolts and studs to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Install the accelerator bracket (2) on the throttle body (1). See Figure . Tighten the accelerator bracket nuts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  5. Connect the accelerator control cable (3) to the throttle body (4) and accelerator bracket (1). See Figure .
  6. Connect the cruise control cable (2) from the throttle body (3) and the accelerator bracket (1). See Figure .
  7. Connect the vacuum hoses to the throttle body.
  8. Connect the TP sensor harness connector.
  9. Connect the IAC valve harness connector.
  10. Install air cleaner outlet resonator, air cleaner intake duct and vent hose.
  11. Test the accelerator movement by depressing the pedal to the floor and releasing the pedal.


CAUTION: Do not use solvent of any type when cleaning the gasket surfaces on the intake manifold and the throttle body assembly, as damage to the gasket surfaces and throttle body assembly may result. Use care in cleaning the gasket surfaces on the intake manifold and the throttle body assembly, as sharp tools may damage the gasket surfaces.
  1. Clean the gasket surface on the intake manifold and the throttle body assembly.
  2. If necessary, install a new gasket. Install the throttle body assembly. See Figure .
  3. Install the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts. Tighten the throttle body retaining nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  4. Connect the throttle body coolant bypass hoses.
  5. Connect the heater pipe nut at the throttle body.
  6. Connect the IAC valve harness connector.
  7. Connect the TP sensor harness connector.
  8. Install the accelerator controls cable bracket.
  9. If applicable connect the cruise control cable to the throttle lever and accelerator bracket.
  10. Connect the accelerator controls cable to the throttle lever and accelerator bracket.
  11. Install the air intake tube. Tighten the air cleaner duct clamp to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
  12. Connect the IAT sensor harness connector.
  13. Connect the breather tube into the air intake tube.
  14. Refill and bleed cooling system. See COOLING SYSTEM BLEEDING  under COOLING SYSTEMS.
  15. The throttle should operate freely without binding between full closed and wide open throttle. Inspect for complete throttle opening and closing positions by operating the accelerator pedal. Also inspect for poor carpet fit under the accelerator pedal.
