Fuel Sender Assembly: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Sunfire and 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.

Fuel sender assembly is located in the fuel tank. See Fig 1.

  1. Release fuel system pressure. See FUEL SYSTEM PRESSURE RELEASE (GASOLINE) .
  2. Remove fuel tank. See FUEL TANK (GASOLINE) .
  3. CAUTION: The fuel sender assembly may spring up when removing. The fuel sender assembly reservoir bucket is full of fuel. The reservoir must be tipped slightly during removal to avoid damage to the float. Carefully discard the reservoir fuel into an approved container.
  4. Use the Fuel Sender Lock Nut Wrench (J 39765) to press down and rotate the retaining ring (1).
  5. Remove the fuel sender assembly.
  6. Remove the fuel level sensor from the fuel sender assembly. See FUEL LEVEL SENSOR .
