Test K: Outside Air Temperature Display Inaccurate

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2002 Oldsmobile Aurora. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
NOTE: An improperly functioning Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor and/or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) can affect ambient air temperature reading.
  1. Perform diagnostic system check. See DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Inspect Ambient Air Temperature Sensor for improper mounting or obstructions. If any problem is found, repair condition and go to step  8. If no problem is found, go to next step.
  3. Connect scan tool. Inspect for any current DTCs relating to Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor (ECT) in Powertrain Control Module (PCM). See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any problem is found, repair condition and go to step  8. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  4. Connect scan tool. Check for any current DTCs relating to Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) in PCM. See appropriate SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. If any problem is found, repair condition and go to step  8. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  5. Check for loose wires and/or poor connections to Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. If poor connection is found, repair as necessary. When repair is complete, go to step  8. If no problems were found, go to next step.
  6. Check ambient air temperature sensor resistance. See SENSOR RESISTANCE  table under A/C SYSTEM DOES NOT MAINTAIN SET TEMPERATURE test. If resistance is within specifications, system is okay, If resistance is not within specification, go to next step.
  7. Replace Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. SeeAMBIENT AIR TEMPERATURE SENSOR  under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION. When repair is complete, go to step  8.
  8. Operate system to verify repair. If condition is corrected, system is okay. If condition is not corrected, go to step  2.
