Frame Replacement: Removal

  1. Install appropriate engine support fixture.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tires and wheels.
  4. Separate the ball joints from the steering knuckle. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
  5. Remove the ABS module from the bracket on left front. See REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate ANTI-LOCK article in BRAKES.
  6. Disconnect the AIR pumps. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE. Leave on frame.
  7. Remove the air deflector.
  8. Remove the brackets securing the power steering lines to the frame. See appropriate POWER RACK & PINION article in STEERING.
  9. Remove the fasteners securing the front transaxle mount to the frame.
  10. Remove the fasteners securing the rear transaxle mount to the frame. See Fig 1.
  11. Remove the fasteners securing the rack and pinion to the frame.
  12. Using mechanics wire, secure the rack and pinion to the body of the vehicle.

  13. Support the engine frame near the frame insulators using appropriate engine support table, or suitable jackstands. See Fig 2.
  14. Remove the engine frame insulator fasteners (3) securing the engine frame (2) to the vehicle. See Fig 3.
  15. Lower the engine frame (2) from the vehicle.
  16. If replacing the frame, separate the engine frame insulators from the engine frame. See Fig 4. Remove lower control arms. See appropriate FRONT article in SUSPENSION.
  17. Transfer all remaining parts to the new frame assembly.
