Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Removal

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the hood from the vehicle.
  2. Remove the negative and positive battery cables, then remove battery.
  3. Remove the 4 battery tray retaining bolts, then remove the battery tray from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the air cleaner case assembly from the vehicle.
  5. Remove the cruise control servo from the vehicle. See appropriate CRUISE CONTROL SYSTEMS article in ACCESSORIES & EQUIPMENT.
  6. Remove the clip, then disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
  7. Remove the shift cable retaining nut, then disconnect shift cable from the transaxle.
  8. Remove the shift cable bracket retaining bolt, then position the shift cable out of the way. See Fig 1 .
  9. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle. See Fig 2 .

  10. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
  11. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
  12. Remove the 2 oil cooler pipe and filler tube retaining bolts. See Fig 3 .
  13. Remove filler tube from the transaxle.
  14. Disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle. See Fig 4 .

  15. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe oxygen sensor electrical connector. See HEATED OXYGEN SENSOR 2 under SENSORS & SWITCHES in REMOVAL & INSTALLATION - VIBE article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  16. Install the engine support fixture.
  17. Raise the vehicle.
  18. Remove the front wheels.
  19. Remove the right and left lower splash shield.
  20. Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  21. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle.
  22. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
    NOTE: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the gray colored bolt for installation.
  23. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. See Fig 5 .

  24. Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
  25. Remove the left and right wheel drive shafts. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  26. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
  27. Remove the 5 bolts from the left engine mount, then remove the mount from the vehicle. See Fig 6 .
  28. Remove the 3 bolts from the left engine mount bracket, then remove the bracket from the vehicle. See Fig 7 .
  29. Remove the rear transaxle mount trough bolt. See Fig 8 .
  30. Remove the 3 nuts and the bolt from the transmission support. See Fig 9 .

  31. Remove the rear transaxle mount from the vehicle.
  32. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt. See Fig 2 .
  33. Remove the 4 transmission support retaining bolts, then lower the transmission support and the front mount from the vehicle. See Fig 10 .
  34. Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle assembly. See Fig 11 .
  35. Remove the rear transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly. See Fig 12 .

  36. Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
  37. Slightly lower the transaxle.
  38. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
