Removal & Installation: Transaxle: Removal

  1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable.
  2. Disconnect the air inlet duct hose from the intake plenum.
  3. Install the appropriate engine support fixture.
  4. Disconnect the transaxle wiring harness from the transaxle and the PNP switch.
  5. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts and stud. See Fig 1 .

  6. Raise and support the vehicle.
  7. Remove the front wheel and tire assemblies.
  8. Remove the left front fender liner.
  9. Remove the front frame assembly.
  10. Remove the 2 bolts from the transaxle brace. See Fig 2 .

  11. Disconnect the shift cable from the shift linkage. See Fig 3 .

  12. Disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
  13. Remove the flywheel inspection cover. See Fig 4 .

  14. Remove the starter. See appropriate STARTERS article in ELECTRICAL.
  15. Mark the relationship of the flywheel to the torque converter for reassembly.
  16. Remove the torque converter-to-flywheel bolts. See Fig 5 .

  17. Remove the transaxle cooler lines by removing the nut holding the bracket to the transaxle case.
  18. Disconnect the VSS wiring harness from the sensor.
  19. Disconnect the wheel drive shafts from the transaxle. See appropriate AXLE SHAFTS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  20. Lower the vehicle.
  21. Remove the body-to-transaxle mount bolts.
  22. Lower the transaxle with the engine support fixture enough to remove the transaxle.
  23. Raise the vehicle.
  24. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
  25. Remove the transaxle to engine nut. See Fig 1 .
  26. Separate the engine and the transaxle.
  27. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
  28. Remove the PNP switch.
  29. Remove the shifter cable bracket.
  30. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine stud.
  31. Remove the transaxle mount.
  32. Flush the transaxle cooler and the lines with appropriate flushing equipment, whenever the transaxle has been removed for overhaul or replacement.
