Disabling System (Explorer & Mountaineer)
WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 110 other vehicles, including the 2003 Pontiac Vibe, 2003 Pontiac Sunfire, 2003 Pontiac Montana, 2003 Pontiac Grand Prix, and 2003 Pontiac Grand Am. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
- Record preset radio frequencies for reprogramming (if equipped). Move and tilt the front seats to their highest and most forward position. Disconnect negative battery cable. Wait at least one minute for backup power supply to deplete stored energy.
- Remove driver's air bag module. See DRIVER AIR BAG MODULE . Connect appropriate air bag simulator to clockspring connectors at top of steering column (in place of air bag). See Figure. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR .
- Remove glove box. Disconnect passenger air bag connector. Connect appropriate air bag simulator to passenger's air bag vehicle harness connector (in place of air bag). See AIR BAG SIMULATOR . For models equipped with safety canopies, go to next step. If vehicle is not equipped with safety canopies, connect negative battery cable.
- The safety canopy bridge resistor is located on the right side of the vehicle, above the headliner. DO NOT disconnect the safety canopy bridge resistor.
- Separate passenger side "C" pillar trim panel. Disconnect passenger side air bag connector, located on "C" pillar behind second row safety belt shoulder height adjuster. Connect appropriate side air bag simulator (in place of air bag). Repeat procedure for driver side air bag. Connect negative battery cable.
- From under front seat, push in to release tab and disconnect seat belt buckle pretensioner electrical connector. Connect appropriate air bag simulator (in place of seat belt pretensioner) to seat belt buckle pretensioner floor electrical connector. See AIR BAG SIMULATOR . Connect the battery ground cable.
NOTE:
If vehicle is not equipped with safety canopies, do not deactivate the safety canopy module circuit by removing the safety canopy bridge resistor from the safety canopy bridge resistor electrical connector. If the safety canopy bridge resistor is removed, an open circuit fault will be generated by the Restraints Control Module (RCM). If a restraint system diagnostic tool is installed at the safety canopy electrical connector, a low resistance fault will be generated by the RCM.
