Removal (1500 Series Without 4-Wheel Steering)

  1. Release the park brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Relieve the tension from the park brake cables by loosening the nut at the equalizer. See Figure.
  5. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable from the backing plate:
    1. Compress the spring by pushing towards the lever. See Figure.
    2. Depress the locking tabs.
    3. Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate.
    4. Remove the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
  6. Remove the rotor. See BRAKE ROTOR .
  7. Remove the axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in the appropriate RING GEARS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  8. Remove the park brake shoe. See PARK BRAKE SHOES .
  9. Remove the backing plate bolts. See Figure.
  10. Remove the backing plate from axle housing flange.
