Installation (1500 HD, 2500 & 3500 Series)

WARNING: This page does not describe the selected car, but rather 7 other vehicles, including the 2002 GMC Yukon XL, 2002 GMC Yukon, 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2002 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth. See Figure.
  2. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
  3. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
  4. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  5. Install the park brake shoe return spring. See Figure.
  6. Adjust the park brake shoe. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
  7. Install the rear axle shaft. See AXLE SHAFTS under REMOVAL & INSTALLATION in appropriate RING GEARS article in DRIVELINE/AXLES.
  8. Install the rotor. See BRAKE ROTOR .
  9. Install the park brake cable to the lever. See Figure.
  10. Perform the following procedure to install the cable to the backing plate:
    • Compress the spring by pushing towards the lever.
    • Route the cable through the slot in the backing plate.
    • Push the cable housing into the backing plate until the locking tabs snap into place.
  11. Install the tire and wheel. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
  12. Remove the safety stands.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
    NOTE: If the park brake automatic adjuster has been disabled, the following 2 person procedure must be performed.
    1. Hold the park brake pedal in the FULL upward position.
    2. Pull rearward on the front park brake cable until the tension is released from the scribe or nail installed through the holes in the pedal assembly.
    3. Remove the scribe or screwdriver.
    4. Slowly release the park brake cable until it returns to its original position.
    5. Release the park brake pedal.
    6. Lower the vehicle.
    7. Apply and release the park brake pedal to ensure that there is no binding or sticking.
  15. For the 1500 HD, install the park brake cable to the equalizer by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then installing the cable to the equalizer bar (1500 HD series only). See Figure.
  16. Adjust the park brake cable. See PARK BRAKE ADJUSTMENT  under ADJUSTMENTS & INSPECTION.
