Test H: Range Selector Display Inaccurate Or Displays Incorrect Range (4L60E): Testing

  1. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Using scan tool, monitor TR switch parameter while selecting each transmission range with gearshift lever. If scan tool display matches actual gear range selected, go to next step. If scan tool display does not match actual gear range selected, go to step  3 .
  2. Observe Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) gear range display while selecting each transmission range. If each selected transmission range does not match IPC display, go to step  13 . If each selected transmission range matches IPC display, problem may be intermittent. Try to recreate fault by wiggling wiring and connectors. Check for faulty connections at all connectors that may be causing intermittent condition.
  3. Using scan tool, monitor TR Sw A/B/C/P display. If TR Sw A/B/C/P parameter does not indicate HIGH for all range signal states, go to next step. If TR Sw A/B/C/P parameter indicates HIGH for all range signal states, go to step  15 .
  4. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect TR switch 4-pin harness connector. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. If TR Sw A/B/C/P parameter does not indicate HIGH for all range signal states, go to next step. If TR Sw A/B/C/P parameter indicates HIGH for all range signal states, go to step  6 .
  5. Disconnect Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) Black 34-pin harness connector. If affected circuit does not display HIGH, go to next step. If affected circuit displays HIGH, go to step  15 .
  6. Individually measure voltage between ground and TR switch harness connector C2 terminal "A" (Black/White wire), terminal "B" (Gray wire), terminal "C" (White wire) and terminal "D" (Yellow wire). If 10-12 volts exists at all terminals, go to next step. If 10-12 volts does not exist at all terminals, go to step  11 .
  7. While monitoring TR Sw A/B/C/P parameters, connect a fused jumper between ground and TR switch harness connector C2 terminal "A" (Black/White wire). If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to next step. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  14 .
  8. While monitoring TR Sw A/B/C/P parameters, move fused jumper from TR switch harness connector C2 terminal "A" (Black/White wire) to terminal "D" (Yellow wire). If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to next step. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  14 .
  9. While monitoring TR Sw A/B/C/P parameters, move fused jumper from TR switch harness connector C2 terminal "D" (Yellow wire) to terminal "B" (Gray wire). If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to next step. If any other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  14 .
  10. While monitoring TR Sw A/B/C/P parameters, move fused jumper from TR switch harness connector C2 terminal "B" (Gray wire) to terminal "C" (White wire). If no other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  13 . If any other signal circuits indicate LOW, go to step  14 .
  11. Check for short to ground in appropriate wire(s), which did not indicate specified voltage, between TR switch and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If circuit(s) are okay, go to next step. If circuit(s) is/are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19 .
  12. Check for open in appropriate wire(s), which did not indicate specified voltage, between TR switch and Powertrain Control Module (PCM). If circuit(s) are okay, go to step  17 . If circuit(s) is/are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19 .
  13. Check for open in Black/White wire, Gray wire, White wire and Yellow wire (transmission range switch signal circuits) between PCM and IPC. If all circuits are okay, go to step  18 . If any circuits are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19 .
  14. Check affected signal circuits of TR switch for a shorted together condition. If all circuits are okay, go to step  16 . If any circuits are not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19 .
  15. Check for open in Black wire (TR switch ground circuit) between ground and TR switch harness connector C1 terminal "D". If Black wire is okay, go to next step. If Black wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  19 .
  16. Replace TR switch (park/neutral switch). After repair, go to step  19 .
  17. Replace PCM. Program as necessary. See PROGRAMMING  . After repair, go to step  19 .
  18. Replace IPC. After repair, go to next step.
  19. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, monitor TR Sw display while selecting each transmission range (P, R, N, D4, D3, D2 and D1). If each selected transmission range matches scan tool display, system is okay at this time. If each selected transmission range does not match scan tool display, go to step  2 .
