DTC P1665: Fuel Level Sender Circuit Open Or Shorted To Ground: Testing

  1. If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If IPC diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . If DTC P1665 is recorded as current, go to next step. If DTC P1665 is recorded as current, check for intermittent or poor connections. See DIAGNOSTIC AIDS  .
  3. Disconnect PCM Red 80-pin (gasoline engine) or Brown 24-pin (diesel engine) harness connector C2. Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Fuel gauge should read FULL when PCM is disconnected and ignition switch is in RUN position. Connect Signal Generator And Instrument Panel Tester (J-33431-C) between ground and IPC harness connector terminal B2 (Purple wire). See Figure . Using a DVOM to verify signal generator and instrument panel tester resistance settings, vary resistance from 40-250 ohms. Fuel gauge should indicate empty at 40 ohms and full at 250 ohms. If fuel gauge did not display correct fuel level, go to next step. If fuel gauge displayed correct fuel level, go to step  6 .
  4. Check for open or short to ground in Purple wire between IPC harness connector terminal B2 and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 38 (gasoline engine) or fuel sender buffer module harness connector terminal "L" (diesel engine). See Figure or Fig 1 . If Purple wire is okay, go to next step. If Purple wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .

  5. Check IPC connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  7 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  6. Check PCM connectors for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step  8 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step  9 .
  7. Replace IPC. After repair, go to step  9 .
  8. Replace PCM. Program as necessary. See PROGRAMMING  . After repair, go to next step.
  9. Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC as specified in CODE ENABLE CRITERIA  . If DTC resets, go to step  2 .
