DTC P0463: Fuel Level Signal Circuit High: Testing

- If Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If IPC diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to INSTRUMENT PANEL CLUSTER DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Using scan tool, observe fuel level sender parameter in PCM ENHANCED EVAP data list. If scan tool indicates fuel level sender parameter is more than 2.9 volts, go to next step. If scan tool indicates fuel level sender parameter is 2.9 volts or less, go to DIAGNOSTIC AIDS .
- Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Disconnect in-line harness connector C301, located in engine harness, in-line to fuel pump harness on left frame rail, near EBCM. Connect a fused (3-amp) jumper wire between fuel tank and level sender assembly harness connector terminals "A" (Purple wire) and terminal "D" Black wire. See Figure . Turn ignition switch to RUN position. Monitor fuel level sender parameter. If scan tool indicates fuel level sender parameter is 0.1 volt or more, go to next step. If scan tool indicates fuel level sender parameter is less than 0.1 volt, go to step 6 .
- On vehicles equipped with gasoline engines, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Purple wire (signal circuit) between fuel tank and level sender assembly harness connector terminal "A" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 54. See Figure and Figure . On vehicles with diesel engines, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Purple wire (signal circuit) between fuel pump and sender harness connector terminal "A" and fuel sender buffer module harness connector terminal "L". See Figure and Figure . On all engines, if Purple wire is okay, go to next step. If Purple wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- If vehicle is equipped with a gasoline engine, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Black wire (low reference circuit) between fuel tank and level sender assembly harness connector terminal "D" and PCM harness connector C2 terminal No. 23. See Figure . On vehicles with diesel engines, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Black wire (low reference circuit) between fuel pump and sender harness connector terminal "D" and Passlock(tm) module harness connector terminal "L". See Figure . If Black wire is okay, go to next step. If Black wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- If vehicle is equipped with a gasoline engine, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Purple wire (signal circuit) between fuel tank and level sensor harness connector terminal "A" and in-line connector C301 terminal "A". See Figure and Figure . On vehicles with diesel engines, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Purple wire (signal circuit) between fuel pump and sender harness connector terminal "D" and Passlock(tm) module harness connector terminal "L". See Figure . On all engines, if Purple wire is okay, go to next step. If Purple wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- If vehicle is equipped with a gasoline engine, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Black wire (low reference circuit) between fuel tank and level sender assembly harness connector terminal "D" and in-line connector C301 terminal No. 23. See Figure and Figure . On vehicles with diesel engines, check for open, high resistance or short to voltage in Black wire (low reference circuit) between fuel pump and sender harness connector terminal "D" and Passlock(tm) module harness connector terminal "L". See Figure . On all engines, if Black wire is okay, go to next step. If Black wire is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check fuel pump and level sensor connector for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step 10 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Check PCM connectors for intermittent or poor terminal contact. If terminal contact is okay, go to step 11 . If terminal contact is not okay, repair as necessary. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace fuel level sender. After repair, go to step 12 .
- Replace PCM. Program as necessary. See PROGRAMMING . After repair, go to next step.
- Using scan tool, clear DTCs. Operate vehicle within conditions for running the DTC as specified in CODE ENABLE CRITERIA . If DTC resets, go to step 2 .
