Shift Select Cable: Removal

  1. Remove the manual shift lever from the vehicle. See MANUAL SELECTOR  .
  2. Remove the inflatable restraint Sensing and Diagnostic Module (SDM) from the vehicle. See appropriate AIR BAG RESTRAINT SYSTEMS article in RESTRAINTS.
  3. Disconnect the HO2S electrical sensor. See appropriate REMOVAL & INSTALLATION article in ENGINE PERFORMANCE.
  4. Perform the following steps to remove the air cleaner assembly from the vehicle:
    1. Disconnect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.
    2. Release the 2 retaining clips (3). See Fig 1 .
    3. Lift the air cleaner cover (2) up and away from the lower assembly.
    4. Remove the air cleaner element.
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle.
  6. Perform the following steps to remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle:
    1. Remove the floor panel brace. See Fig 2 .
    2. Remove the 2 bolts and the 2 springs from the exhaust manifold. See Fig 3 .
    3. Remove the 2 bolts and the 2 springs from the front pipe to the Three Way Catalytic Converter (TWC) exhaust pipe.
    4. Remove the front pipe from the front pipe hanger (2).
    5. Remove the front pipe from the vehicle.
    6. Clean the gasket and seal the mating surfaces.
  7. Remove the front heat shield from the vehicle.
  8. Remove the cable retaining clip, then disconnect the cable from the bracket.
  9. Remove the shift select cable from the cable support bracket. See Fig 4 .
  10. Remove the 2 nuts, then separate the cable from the vehicle. See Fig 5 .
  11. Using a screwdriver, disconnect the shift select cable from the bracket. See Figure .
  12. Disconnect the shift select cable from the transaxle.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Remove the shift select cable from the vehicle.
  15. Inspect the shift select cable for kinks, fraying, or excessive wear. Replace as necessary.
