Checking Fluid Level & Condition

NOTE: Transmission fluid may turn dark with normal use and does not always indicate contamination or oxidation.
  1. Inspect the fluid color. Is the fluid color red? If so, go to step  4 . If not, go to next step.
  2. Inspect the fluid color. Is the fluid color a non-transparent pink? If so, go to step  13 . If not, go to next step.
  3. Inspect the fluid color. If the fluid color light brown, go to step  18 .
  4. Inspect the fluid. Is the fluid foamy? If so, go to step  12 . If not, go to next step.
  5. Inspect the fluid level. Is the fluid level high? If so, go to step  8 . If not, go to next step.
  6. Inspect the fluid level. Is the fluid level low? If so, go to step  9 . If not, go to next step.
  7. Confirm that the fluid level is okay. If the fluid inspection is complete, go to step  20 .
  8. Remove excess fluid and go to step  20 .
  9. Add fluid in order to obtain the proper level and go to next step.
  10. Inspect for external leaks and go to next step.
  11. Repair the leak and go to step  20 .
  12. Inspect for a high fluid level. Is the fluid level high? If so, go to step  8 . If not, go to next step.
  13. Inspect for contaminants in the fluid and go to next step.
  14. Drain the fluid in order to determine the source of contamination and go to next step.
  15. Perform a transmission overhaul. See appropriate OVERHAUL article. When completed, go to next step.
  16. Add new fluid and go to next step.
  17. Inspect the fluid level and go to step  20 .
  18. Drain the fluid in order to determine if there is contamination. Are there large pieces of metal or other material in the bottom of the pan? If so, go to step  15 . If not, go to next step.
    NOTE: A very small amount of material in the bottom pan is a normal condition.
  19. Change the fluid and filter. See TRANSAXLE OIL FILTER  . When completed, go to next step.
  20. Perform the road test. See PERFORMANCE TESTS in appropriate DIAGNOSIS article. When completed, system is okay.
