DTC P1631: Invalid Password Received: Testing

  1. If theft deterrent diagnostic system check has been performed, go to next step. If theft deterrent diagnostic system check has not been performed, go to THEFT DETERRENT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
    2. NOTE: Diagnose Bxxxx codes prior to diagnosing any Pxxxx code.
  2. Turn ignition switch to OFF position. Connect scan tool to Data Link Connector (DLC), located below steering column. See Figure . Momentarily turn ignition switch to CRANK position, not letting engine start, release ignition switch to RUN position. Select scan tool PCM display DTCs function. If scan tool displays DTC P1631 as a current DTC, go to next step. If scan tool does not display DTC P1631 as a current DTC, check for intermittent or poor connections.
  3. Perform PROGRAMMING THEFT DETERRENT SYSTEM COMPONENTS  . If PCM successfully learned the password, go to next step. If PCM did not learn the password, go to THEFT DETERRENT DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM CHECK  under SELF-DIAGNOSTIC SYSTEM.
    4. NOTE: Before Clearing DTCs, monitor all DTC status parameters and note any additional DTCs.
  4. Clear PCM DTCs. Turn ignition switch to OFF position for 30 seconds. Attempt to start engine. If engine does not start or operate normally, go to step  2 . If engine starts and operates normally, system is okay at this time.
