Parking Brake Shoe Replacement

Preliminary Procedures

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  2. Remove the rear tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  3. Remove the rear brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement .
1 Park Brake Shoe Hold Down Spring (Qty: 2)
Procedure: 
Compress the spring and rotate 1/4 turn to release.
2 Park Brake Shoe Hold Down Spring Pin (Qty: 2)
3 Park Brake Shoe Adjuster Spring
Procedure: 
Using the J 38400  , remove the adjuster spring. See Special Tools .
Special Tools: 
J 38400  Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover. See Special Tools .
4 Park Brake Shoe Adjuster Screw
Procedure: 
Clean the threads and apply high temperature grease to the adjuster screw.
5 Park Brake Shoe Return Spring
Procedure: 
Using the J 38400  , remove the return spring. See Special Tools .
Special Tools: 
J 38400  Brake Shoe Spanner and Spring Remover. See Special Tools .
6 Park Brake Shoe (Qty: 2)

Procedure

  1. Use denatured alcohol to clean brake dust or grease from the park brake shoes and hardware.
  2. If reinstalling the park brake shoes, note the location of the park brake shoes for installation.
  3. Apply a small amount of high temperature silicone grease to the brake shoe and backing plate contact points.
  4. Adjust the park brake. Refer to Parking Brake Adjustment .
