Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2009 Saturn Vue. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Position the steering gear in the vehicle through the left wheelhouse opening. Ensure the steering gear bushings are centered in the frame.

    CAUTION: Refer to Fastener Caution .
    NOTE: Hand start the steering gear bolts before finalizing any torques.
  2. Install the steering gear bolts and tighten to 110 N.m (81 lb ft).
  3. Connect the steering shaft coupling to the steering gear.

  4. Install a NEW steering shaft coupling bolt (1) and tighten to 33 N.m (24 lb ft).

  5. Install a NEW O-ring seal and connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the steering gear. Tighten the power steering gear inlet hose fitting to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
  6. Install a NEW O-ring seal and connect the power steering cooler hose (1) to the steering gear. Tighten the power steering cooler hose fitting to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  7. Install the power steering gear inlet hose bracket bolt (1) and tighten to 9 N.m (80 lb in).
  8. Install the rear transmission mount.

  9. Install the 3 rear transmission mount bolts (1) and tighten to 50 N.m (37 lb ft).

  10. Install the rear transmission mount through bolt and tighten to 110 N.m (81 lb ft).
  11. Connect the stabilizer shaft links to the stabilizer shaft. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .

  12. Use the J-44015:  installer in order to seat the steering linkage outer tie rods. Tighten the J-44015:  installer to 40 N.m (30 lb ft).

  13. Install new steering linkage outer tie rod nuts (1) and tighten to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).
  14. Tighten the steering linkage outer tie rod nuts an additional 90 degrees.
  15. Clean any excess fluid from the vehicle.
  16. Remove the drain pans.
  17. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  18. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  19. Measure and adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment .
