Automatic Transmission Fluid Leaks

Automatic Transmission Fluid Leaks

Checks Cause
DEFINITION: Automatic transmission fluid leaks that occur on the transmission.
Automatic Transmission Fluid Level High fluid level - causing an oil leak at the vent cap (52).
Automatic Transmission Fluid Condition
  • Contaminated with engine coolant, engine oil, brake fluid, etc.
  • Oxidized and degraded - causing oil foaming and an oil leak at the vent cap
Vent Cap Assembly
  • The vent cap assembly (52) is plugged or damaged - causing high internal pressure inside the transmission and causing oil leakage at another component.
  • Channel plate gasket (28) improperly torqued.
Bottom Pan Assembly
  • The bottom pan bolts and screws are loose, cross-threaded, or missing.
  • The bottom pan (88) is damaged.
  • The bottom pan gasket (87) is out of position or damaged.
Oil Filter and Seal Assembly
  • The oil filter assembly (85) is damaged.
  • The oil filter seal assembly (84) is missing or damaged - causing oil foaming and an oil leak at the vent assembly.
Side Cover Assembly
  • The side cover bolts and screws (3, 4, 126) are loose, cross-threaded, or missing.
  • The side cover (1) is porous or damaged.
  • The side cover gasket (5) are out of position or damaged.
  • The wiring harness assembly (11) is damaged or is leaking at the electrical connector terminals.
Front Wheel Drive Shaft Oil Seal Assemblies The front wheel drive shaft oil seal assemblies (2, 5) are loose or damaged.
Oil Cooler Pipe Seal The oil cooler pipe seal (49) are loose, damaged, or are missing.
Vehicle Speed Sensor Assembly
  • The vehicle speed sensor bolt or screw (61) is loose, cross-threaded, or missing.
  • The vehicle speed sensor O-ring seal (63) is out of position or is damaged.
Line Pressure Tap Plug The line pressure tap plug (48) is loose, cross-threaded, damaged, or is missing a sealer.
Manual Shaft and Detent Lever Assembly
  • The manual shaft and detent lever seal assembly (809) is out of position or is damaged.
  • The manual shift shaft (807) sealing surface is damaged.
Actuator Guide Assembly
  • The actuator guide pin (810) is loose or missing.
  • The actuator guide (812) is damaged.
  • The actuator guide O-ring seal (811) is out of position, missing, or damaged.
Torque Converter Seal Assembly The torque converter seal assembly (54) is loose or damaged.
Drive Sprocket Support Assembly The drive sprocket support (43) oil drain back holes are plugged or missing - causing repeat leaks at the torque converter oil seal assembly (54).
Case Assembly The case assembly (51) is porous or damaged.
