Rack and Pinion Outer Tie Rod End Replacement

Preliminary Procedure Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle . Remove the front wheel and tire assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
1	Outer Tie Rod Castle Nut NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice . Tip: Prior to installing the castle nut, use the J 44015 to seat the ball stud taper. Tighten the tool to 40 N.m (30 lb ft). Torque: 25 N.m (18 lb ft) + 90 degrees.
2	Outer Tie Rod Jam Nut Tighten: 60 N.m (44 lb ft). Tip: To keep toe alignment in approximate location, mark the location of the jam nut on the inner tie rod prior to removal.
3	Outer Tie Rod IMPORTANT: Do not free the ball stud from the steering knuckle by use of a pickle fork or a wedge type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result. Tip: Use the SA91100C , to separate the outer tie rod ball stud from the steering knuckle. Inspect the inner tie rod for bent or damaged threads. Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle. Lubricate the tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Refer to Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations Count the number of turns during removal to aid installation. Adjust the front toe.
