Cylinder Head Installation - Left Side

    IMPORTANT:
    • 2006 model year and later engines use a second design cylinder head bolt with a 12 point head.
    • The second design 12 point head bolts are interchangeable with the first design 6 point head bolts. The cylinder head bolts must be replaced as a set of 8 on either side of the engine and cannot be mixed.
    • Both first and second design cylinder head bolts are reusable.
  1. Inspect the cylinder head bolts and identify the type of bolt for proper tightening.
    • The first design bolts (1) have a 6 point hex head.
    • The second design bolts (2) have a 12 point head.

  3. Inspect the second design 12 point cylinder head bolts, if applicable, to determine if they can be used again. Measure the bolt diameter at locations 45 mm (1.8 in) (b) and 50 mm (2.0 in) (a) from the end of the bolt. If the bolt diameter is less than 10.6 mm (0.42 in) at either location, the bolt needs to be replaced.

  5. Install the pins (226), NEW gasket (225) and cylinder head (200).
  6. Apply clean engine oil to the threads and flanges of the cylinder head bolts (208).
  7. NOTE: Refer to Fastener Notice in Cautions and Notices.
  8. Install the bolts (208).

  10. Tighten the bolts in sequence (1-8). Use a beam-type torque wrench. When using a preset type torque wrench, be sure to tighten the bolts slowly and not to overtighten. If a bolt makes any noise during tightening, loosen the bolt and tighten again beginning at the first step of the tightening procedure.
    • Tighten: 

      1. Tighten the 6 point head bolts a first pass in sequence to 39 N.m (29 lb ft).
      2. Tighten the 6 point head bolts a second pass in sequence to 69 N.m (51 lb ft).
      3. Tighten the 6 point head bolts a final pass to 98 N.m (72 lb ft).

    • Tighten: 

      1. Tighten the NEW 12 point head bolts a first pass in sequence to 29 N.m (21 lb ft).
      2. Tighten the NEW 12 point head bolts a second pass in sequence 90 degrees using the J 45059  , SA9140E  , or equivalent.
      3. Tighten the NEW 12 point head bolts a third pass in sequence 90 degrees using the J 45059  , SA9140E  , or equivalent.
      4. Tighten the NEW 12 point head bolts a final pass in sequence 90 degrees using the J 45059  , SA9140E  , or equivalent.

    • Tighten: 

      1. Tighten the USED 12 point head bolts a first pass in sequence to 29 N.m (21 lb ft).
      2. Tighten the USED 12 point head bolts a second pass in sequence 90 degrees using the J 45059  , SA9140E  , or equivalent.
      3. Tighten the USED 12 point head bolts a third pass in sequence 90 degrees using the J 45059  , SA9140E  , or equivalent.
