Removal Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Remove the hood from the vehicle. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
  2. Remove the battery. Refer to BATTERY REPLACEMENT in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the 4 battery tray retaining bolts, then remove the battery tray from the vehicle.
  4. Remove the air cleaner case assembly from the vehicle.
  5. Remove the cruise control servo from the vehicle. Refer to CRUISE CONTROL SERVO REPLACEMENT in Cruise Control.
  6. Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL in Engine Mechanical - 1.8L (LV6).

  7. Remove the clip, then disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
  8. Remove the shift cable retaining nut, then disconnect shift cable from the transaxle.
  9. Remove the shift cable bracket retaining bolt, then position the shift cable out of the way.
  10. Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle.

  11. Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
  12. Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
  13. Remove the 2 oil cooler pipe and filler tube retaining bolts.
  14. Remove filler tube from the transaxle.

  15. Disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle.
  16. Disconnect the front exhaust pipe oxygen sensor electrical connector. Refer to ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 2 Replacement (AWD) on page 6-973 in Engine Electrical.
  17. Install the engine support fixture.
  18. Raise the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
  19. Remove the front wheels. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  20. Remove the left lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - LEFT in Body Front End.

  21. Remove the right lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - RIGHT in Body Front End.
  22. Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle. Refer to STARTING SYSTEM in Engine Electrical.
  23. Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (AWD) or CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (2WD) in Engine Exhaust.
  24. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.
    IMPORTANT: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the gray colored bolt for installation.
  25. Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
  26. Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
  27. Remove the left and right wheel drive shafts. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  28. Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.

  29. Remove the 5 bolts from the left engine mount, then remove the mount from the vehicle.

  30. Remove the 3 bolts from the left engine mount bracket, then remove the bracket from the vehicle.

  31. Remove the rear transaxle mount trough bolt.

  32. Remove the 3 nuts and the bolt from the transmission support.
  33. Remove the rear transaxle mount from the vehicle.

  34. Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.

  35. Remove the 4 transmission support retaining bolts, then lower the transmission support and the front mount from the vehicle.

  36. Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle assembly.

  37. Remove the rear transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
  38. Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
  39. Slightly lower the transaxle.
  40. Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
