Removal Procedure

- Remove the hood from the vehicle. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
- Remove the battery. Refer to BATTERY REPLACEMENT in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the 4 battery tray retaining bolts, then remove the battery tray from the vehicle.
- Remove the air cleaner case assembly from the vehicle.
- Remove the cruise control servo from the vehicle. Refer to CRUISE CONTROL SERVO REPLACEMENT in Cruise Control.
- Remove the cylinder head cover from the engine. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL in Engine Mechanical - 1.8L (LV6).
- Remove the clip, then disconnect the shift cable from the bracket.
- Remove the shift cable retaining nut, then disconnect shift cable from the transaxle.
- Remove the shift cable bracket retaining bolt, then position the shift cable out of the way.
- Remove the 2 bolts and ground cables from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the 3 transaxle wiring harness connectors from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the breather hose from the transaxle.
- Remove the 2 oil cooler pipe and filler tube retaining bolts.
- Remove filler tube from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the oil cooler pipes from the transaxle.
- Disconnect the front exhaust pipe oxygen sensor electrical connector. Refer to ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 2 Replacement (AWD) on page 6-973 in Engine Electrical.
- Install the engine support fixture.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to LIFTING AND JACKING THE VEHICLE in General Information.
- Remove the front wheels. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the left lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - LEFT in Body Front End.
- Remove the right lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - RIGHT in Body Front End.
- Remove the starter assembly from the vehicle. Refer to STARTING SYSTEM in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the exhaust pipe from the vehicle. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (AWD) or CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (2WD) in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transaxle.IMPORTANT: Before removing the torque converter bolts, mark the position of the gray colored bolt for installation.
- Remove the 6 flywheel-to-torque converter bolts.
- Remove the transaxle drain plug and the oil.
- Remove the left and right wheel drive shafts. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
- Support the transaxle with a suitable jack.
- Remove the 5 bolts from the left engine mount, then remove the mount from the vehicle.
- Remove the 3 bolts from the left engine mount bracket, then remove the bracket from the vehicle.
- Remove the rear transaxle mount trough bolt.
- Remove the 3 nuts and the bolt from the transmission support.
- Remove the rear transaxle mount from the vehicle.
- Remove the front transaxle mount through bolt.
- Remove the 4 transmission support retaining bolts, then lower the transmission support and the front mount from the vehicle.
- Remove the front transaxle mount from the transaxle assembly.
- Remove the rear transaxle mounting bracket from the transaxle assembly.
- Remove the 6 transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
- Slightly lower the transaxle.
- Remove the transaxle from the vehicle.
