Installation Procedure

WARNING: This page is about a different car, the 2003 Pontiac Vibe. However, it is still accessible from the selected car via links, so may be relevant.
  1. Install the 6 transaxle to engine retaining bolts.

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the bolts (1) to 64 N.m (47 lb ft).
    • Tighten the bolt (2) to 46 N.m (35 lb ft).
    • Tighten the bolts (3) to 23 N.m (17 lb ft).

  2. Install the rear transaxle mounting bracket to the transaxle with the 3 bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 64 N.m (47 lb ft).

  3. Install the front transaxle mount to the transaxle with the 2 bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 64 N.m (47 lb ft).

  4. Install the transmission support with the 4 bolts on the vehicle.

    Tighten 

    • Tighten the bolts (1) to 39 N.m (29 lb ft).
    • Tighten the bolt (2) to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

  5. Install the front mount through bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

  6. Install the rear transaxle mount to the transmission support.
  7. Install the 3 nuts and bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt and 3 nuts to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

  8. Install the rear transaxle mount through bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolt and nut to 87 N.m (64 lb ft).

  9. Install the left transaxle mounting bracket and 3 bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

  10. Install the left mount to the body.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the 4 bolts to 52 N.m (38 lb ft).

  11. Install the left mount through bolt and nut.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the through bolt and nut to 80 N.m (59 lb ft).

    IMPORTANT: The gray colored bolt must be installed first. This bolt is to insure proper alignment for the other 5 bolts.
  12. Install the 6 torque converter bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 25 N.m (18 lb ft).

  13. Install the flywheel inspection cover
  14. Lower the jack from the transaxle.
  15. Install the starter assembly in the vehicle. Refer to STARTING SYSTEM in Engine Electrical.
  16. Install the left and right drive shafts. Refer to REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
  17. Install the exhaust pipe in the vehicle. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (AWD) or CATALYTIC CONVERTER REPLACEMENT (2WD) in Engine Exhaust.

  18. Install the front wheels. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in Tires and Wheels.
  19. Install the drain plug with a new gasket.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the drain plug to 17 N.m (13 lb ft).

  20. Install the left lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - LEFT in Body Front End.
  21. Install the right lower splash shield. Refer to SPLASH SHIELD REPLACEMENT - ENGINE - RIGHT in Body Front End.
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. Remove the engine support fixture.
  24. Connect the transaxle oil cooler pipes to the transaxle.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the oil cooler pipe nuts 35 N.m (25 lb ft).

  25. Install the oil filler tube with a new O-ring into the transaxle.

  26. Install the 2 bolts with the oil cooler pipe clamp to the transaxle assembly.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the oil cooler pipe clamp bolts 6 N.m (49 lb in).

  27. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the nut.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the nut to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).

  28. Connect the shift cable to the transaxle, then install the clip.
  29. Connect the shift cable to the cable bracket, then install the bracket bolt.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the nut to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).

  30. Connect the 3 electrical connectors to the transaxle.

  31. Connect the oxygen sensor electrical connector. Refer to ENGINE CONTROL SYSTEM - REMOVAL & INSTALLATION or Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) 2 Replacement (AWD) on page 6-973 in Engine Controls 1.8L (LV6).
  32. Connect the 2 wire harness brackets, then install the 2 bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 12 N.m (9 lb ft).

  33. Install the 2 bolts and ground cables to the transaxle.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 10 N.m (7 lb ft).

  34. Install the cruise control servo in the vehicle. Refer to CRUISE CONTROL SERVO REPLACEMENT in Cruise Control.
  35. Install the battery tray and the 4 bolts.

    Tighten 

    Tighten the bolts to 13 N.m (9 lb ft).

  36. Install the battery. Refer to BATTERY REPLACEMENT in Engine Electrical.
  37. Install the air cleaner case assembly.
  38. Install the cylinder head cover in the engine. Refer to CYLINDER HEAD COVER REMOVAL in Engine Mechanical - 1.8L (LV6).

  39. Install the hood on the vehicle. Refer to HOOD REPLACEMENT in Body Front End.
  40. Fill the transaxle with 3.1 L (3.25 qt) of AC Delco T-IV (GM P/N 88900925).
